Before

In the fall of 2025 we finished the accent beams for the front porch. It’s a great space, but the hodge-podge of chairs just wasn’t working to create cozy vibes.

A few weeks ago I realized I needed to get a jump on creating an actual outdoor living space to enjoy the crisp mornings and cool evenings that autumn will bring. I looked for inspiration online and found modern chair plans by Ana White.

Tim is always up for a project, so with one trip to Lowe’s and just a few hours in the shop we had our first chair.

We ended up modifying the plans from the website after this, because the seat was too high for the overall height of the chair. There wasn’t enough space to support a back cushion. (At this point I realized why all the pictures showed these chairs positioned against a wall!)

Three days later we had a pair of chairs. Two days after that, we made a matching sofa from our modified plan to anchor the space.

After

Decorating on a Dime

  • We used two 8×10 rugs we already had and pushed them together to cover our space.
  • I bought two Boston Ferns from Lowe’s and brought out two plants from inside. We moved two olive trees we already owned to anchor the corners of the porch.
  • I rummaged through the house for extra lanterns and the vase with ivy.
  • Eighteen dollars at Hobby Lobby got me the barn print and the brown glass bottle beside it that has completely disappeared into the background of this photo.

Once the temperature and humidity are lower, we will enjoy some morning coffee in this space. Personally, I’m looking forward to curling up with a blanket and a good book in the late afternoon.

In what ways would you enjoy an outdoor living space on a crisp autumn day?
